Friends of Chitawira in Blantyre on Saturday donated assorted items to 1 081 people affected by Tropical Storm Ana in Chikwawa District.

The items included maize flour, salt, soya pieces, buckets and clothing.

Speaking on Sunday after the donation, the group’s coordinator Martin Chiphwanya said they raised resources through WhatsApp and Facebook platforms to help the flood survivors.

“These are our fellow Malawians and as you can see, the situation is sad. We felt we needed to make a difference by putting a smile on their face,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Ronald Sankhulani said they needed more supplies.

“Our crops were washed away by flood. So, we need seeds and fertilisers to replant,” he said.

In January, Tropical Storm Ana caused floods in 13 districts and destroyed homes and infrastructure such as roads.

According to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs, the storm killed at least 46 people and affected about 900 000 people.

President Lazarus Chakwera declared a State of National Disaster and called for humanitarian assistance.
